Webcasts are basically any linear audio or video program sent out over the Internet. What is linear? Linear is a term that derives from the early days of digital media when it became possible for any part of a program to be accessed without fast forwarding or rewinding. Winding analog tape is a linear process – clicking to one portion or another of a program is non-linear (and only possible through the magic of digital media). Today, it has become understood that any program which has a beginning and an end without interruption is “linear”, while any program that can be interrupted at any point by a listener/viewer is “nonlinear” and often interactive, enabling the listener/viewer to add comments, etc.

Webcasts are a great way to demonstrate products, explain a technology, show a process, or display any number of other activities typically performed by a business. They can be either scheduled or “on-demand” – available on your web site for visitors to watch at their convenience. Like any conventional broadcast, they require careful scripting to avoid mistakes or glitches and to assure that the message is clear and compelling.
